2D materials like graphene have high surface to volume ratio, making them extremely sensitive to their environment: such sensitivity can be exploited for sensing applications as well as for adatom-based engineering of material properties. Functionalization of their surface by atoms or molecules can modify the electronic, structural, chemical and optical properties. For example in graphene the strong in-plane C-C covalent bonds facilitate chemical modification without breaking its atomic framework. This provides an attractive route to engineer graphene’s properties for various applications. Previously we have studied the doping and scattering effects of metals (Au, Fe, Pt, Ti) on the electronic and spin- related properties of graphene, to understand the influence of the metal contacts on the intrinsic properties of graphene. Moreover we have successfully utilized adsorbed atomic hydrogen to induce magnetic moments in graphene, which we elucidate by studying the spin transport in lateral non-local spin valve devices as a function of controlled amount of hydrogen dosage in a ultra-high vacuum.
An important aspect of adatom absorption on graphene is the magnetic behavior of the adatom. It is well known that the 3d TM atoms Mn, Fe and Co possess magnetic moments of 5, 4 and 3 μ B, respectively 27. In the case of vertical manipulation, atomic relaxations of the tip and its neighboring atoms are found to be prominent and tip-induced changes in the bonding of the adatom to its low coordinated surroundings help explain the relative ease with which an adatom next to a step edge or a kink site may be pulled as compared to that on a flat surface.
